Information Regarding Water Levels and No Wake Order

Hello neighbors,

As you are aware, the recent heavy rainfall has caused lake levels to rise, triggering the no-wake rule for Medicine Lake. While I know we’re all excited to get out on the water, I also know we all care deeply about protecting our shorelines. We appreciate everyone’s support as we give the lake time to return to its normal levels.

The no-wake rule is enacted when the lake remains at or above 889.4 feet for three consecutive days. The City of Plymouth is now using GPS technology to measure lake levels and will provide daily updates at the following link:

https://www.plymouthmn.gov/Home/Components/News/News/8617/542

Here are the latest readings:

  • June 29: 889.50 feet (visual estimate, no GPS data available)
  • June 30: 889.51 feet
  • July 1: 889.51 feet
  • July 2: 889.39 feet
  • July 3: 889.34 feet

This is the first high-water situation we’ve experienced since the new sign was posted at the Bassett Creek dam, and we’ve identified a discrepancy between the signage and the precise GPS measurements taken throughout the lake. As the lake fills from numerous inlets, water levels in those areas can be higher than at the outlet. For example, earlier this week, the water level at the dam was 889.2 feet, while readings at West Park showed 889.5 feet.

Because of this discrepancy, the City of Plymouth has covered the sign with black plastic and is now relying exclusively on GPS data for official measurements.

According to the ordinance, the no-wake order will be lifted once the lake level drops to 889.4 feet or below for three consecutive days. The City of Plymouth will continue to take daily readings and post updates. So, if we get another low reading tomorrow (July 4th), the no-wake order will be lifted for July 5th. We will let you all know as soon as the no-wake order has been lifted.

Have a wonderful Fourth of July!
