Waste, recycling and organics

The City of Medine Lake contracts Republic Services to provide garbage, recycling and organics collection services to all residential households. By working with one waste hauler, Medicine Lake is able to establish a number of important benefits, including the same-day collection of garbage and recycling. Not only is this more convenient for our residents, but it also saves traffic wear and tear on our streets.

Recycling Tips: _Acceptable Items for Recycling

Organics

Republic Services also collects our Organics Recycling weekly. To receive a cart for your organics, please call Republic Waste at (952) 941-5174.  Accepted organics recycling items include:

  • All food waste (fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, bones, dairy products, egg shells, pasta, beans, rice, bread, cereal, nuts and shells)
  • Food-soiled paper that is not coated with plastic (pizza delivery boxes, napkins, paper towels, paper egg cartons, facial tissue)
  • Certified compostable products (look for the BPI or ASTM certified logo)
  • Other compostable items (coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, hair clippings, houseplants and flowers, wooden items such as chop sticks, toothpicks, and popsicle sticks)

Unacceptable items include:

Yard waste, pet waste, diapers, sanitary products, baby wipes, grease or oil, Styrofoam, dryer sheets, and items labeled biodegradable and not labeled as BPI-approved.

Bagging of your organics is required. Bags labeled BPI-certified compostable that meet ASTM D6400 standards must be used to collect organics. When you bag organic items, they must be put in a certified compostable bag. Accepted brands include Bag to Nature, BioBag, EcoSafe and any others that have the BPI-certified logo. You can find these bags online or in stores such as Home Depot, Lakewinds, Menards and Target.

Only pizza boxes and egg cartons can go in the cart without being bagged. You can use BPI certified compostable bags, in addition to regular brown paper bags, to collect your organics waste. Accepted certified brands include Bag to Nature, BioBag, EcoSafe and any others that have the BPI-certified logo. You can find these bags online or in stores such as Cub, Home Depot, Lakewinds, Menards, Target and Ace Hardware.
